Metal turning is process in which this material’s outer surface is removed. Precision turned components are prepared by rotating workpiece. Turning is used for decreasing the diameter of the workpiece. Precision components’ surfaces are placed parallel to the cutting tool. This can be done manually, with use of lathe which is done continuous supervision of operator.  CNC turned parts are fabricated using computerized machines which is termed as CNC.

Precision turned parts are obtained when they are rotated and the cutting tool is traversed along 2 axes of motion to fabricate with precise diameters and depths.  Precision turned components can either be obtain after turning them inside or outside the cylinder. If turned inside the cylinder than the precision components are of various geometries. CNC turned parts are being obtained from the machines from last three quarters of twentieth century.

Turning activity is typically carried out on a lathe, which is considered to be the oldest machine tools. It is basically of four different types including taper turning, profiling, straight turning or external grooving. Precision turned components produced are in various shapes of materials like curved,  straight, conical or grooved workpiece. Turning make use of simple single-point cutting tools. Optimum set of tools angles are there with each set of workpieces which came into being over the  years. Chips are bits of waste metal which are left after turning operations.
Metal turning is the most basic machining processes. In this operation, the part is rotated while single point cutting tool is actioned parallel to the axis of the rotation. This process can be performed on the external surface or on the internal surface. The material which is worked upon is generally obtained after the process of casting, drawing, forging and extrusion.
To produce various precision components like nuts, screws, bolts etc skilled labor is required and production is carried on in slow process. The method is designing the materials which are used in several applications.
